Our department features ten German and three Scandinavian specialists who collaborate fully in an intellectual enterprise focused on modernity. Our various sub-concentrations, which include philosophical and theoretical discourses, Holocaust and memory studies, film, visual culture, folk traditions, and German Shakespeare Studies, represent substantive links to other departments and programs, in particular Philosophy, History, Judaic Studies, Art History, Music, English, Comparative Literature, Folklore, and Cinema Studies.

With ample opportunity for study abroad, our 50 undergraduate majors pursue the B.A. with a focus in one of three areas: German Literature and Language; German Studies; Scandinavian. Language instruction covers German and Swedish.

Our innovative graduate curriculum is designed to provide M.A. and Ph.D. students with a firm grounding in modern (post-1750) German literature and to enable them to locate this literature within the context of modern European history and thought.

We are the editorial home of KONTUREN, a new online journal focusing on questions of shifting borderlines in German Studies and contemporary theory.

"Music in Poetry, Poetry in Music: an Interdisciplinary Symposium on German Art Song" - a collaboration between the German Studies Committee and the School of Music and Dance will be held on April 7-8, 2017. Lectures (mixed with performance) during each of the days of April 7th and 8th, with a Liederabend (evening of musical performances of Lieder and Readings of German Poetry) on Saturday, April 8, 2017. Details forthcoming.

Come stay 5 minutes or stay an hour! Everyone of all skill levels of Swedish, or any other Scandinavian language are welcome to come and join. Fika klubb is a student run organization that provides opportunities for University of Oregon students and members of the community to practice their Swedish (Danish and Norwegian too!) in a casual setting. Meets weekly in the Hearth Cafe in Lawrence Hall. We occasionally meet at other times as well, to watch films, play klubb, go on group hikes or trips to local places around Eugene or in the general area. People of all skill levels are encouraged to participate!

There will be a reception as well as pre-conference registration on Thursday, April 20, from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm, at the Jaqua Academic Center Atrium (1615 East 13th Avenue), near the conference hotel.
